Published in Ramon Llull. Seventh centenary
Keywords: Law, Monarchy, Politics, discourse, manuscripts.
The aim of this paper is to show how discursive variants stated in the prologues of the juridical works by Alphonse X –in particular, the Siete Partidas– become essential elements for the analysis of changes in his political projects. In this regard, I intend to show the ways in which alphonsine juridical writings are connected to their context, in order to understand the different communicative strategies that are present in those texts as a part of the changes and adaptations that were influenced by historical events.

In december of 1496, the king of Portugal D. Manuel I (1495-1521) ordered the expulsion of jews from the kingdom in a period of ten months –decree that would be transformed, in 1497, in forced convertion to the catholicism. It was the beginning of the catholics’ monopoly in the portuguese world, finishing the time of free faith that was a characteristic of Portugal during the Medieval age. This article should make an analysis about the "Jews’ time" in Portugal, in a period that includes since the beginning of the jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula – during the Flavio Vespasiano’s governement – until the expulsion from Spain and Portugal, in the end of the XV century – moment that deserves more attention -, giving importance to the relations between jews and christians, the contributions of jews to the portuguese society, the causes of the proihibition of free faith and the general changes to jews – converted in new-christians – and to the kingdom.

After the third century, a widespread repertoire of Christian images is created. Recognition of the characters of Biblical history was made by their assimilation to motifs of Roman art. The study of origin, development and modifications that modified the face of Christ offers the possibility of analyzing the multiple sources for this image as well as establishing the changes of its meaning, that run parallel to the history of the Church.

The Royal Chapel, completed under Henry II of Trastamara in 1371, exerted a powerful influence on the nobility in Cordoba, which in its monumental buildings, be they funerary chapels, palatial houses or castles, adopted the Mudejar style as an expression of ostentation and power. Such glorification of their lineage can be seen in the representation of their coats of arms above the entrances to the halls and in their private chapels, decorated with plasterwork inspired by the flamboyant decoration of the Royal Chapel, whose excellent state of conservation is due to various reforms carried out between the 16th and 19th centuries, as has been shown by the inscriptions we have discovered on the base of the arches of the vaults and which we would like to make public in this article.

Islamic architecture presents a three-dimensional decoration system known as muqarnas. An original system created in the Near East between the second/eighth and the fourth/tenth centuries due to the fragmentation of the squinche, but it was in the fourth/eleventh century when it turned into a basic element, not only all along the Islamic territory but also in the Islamic vocabulary. However, the origin and shape of muqarnas has not been thoroughly considered by Historiography. This research tries to prove the importance of Sasanian Art in the aesthetics creation of muqarnas.

The Sense and the Reason of Being of Dante Alighieri’s Paradise

Dante, along Commedia, establishes the great process of his Mystical Union. Once freed from sin, our poet can re-enter into possession of his free will and win the Earthly Paradise (the philosophical blessedness). His “long walk” through Hell and Purgatory thus marks the first phase of his union with God and gives the first of two sanctities, the sanctity of nature (the philosophical blessedness). Paradiso of Dante develops exactly the other two stages. In its ascent through the various heavens, Dante gradually breaks away from all connection with the earth, until, enlightened by truth, can gain access to Celestial Paradise (the theological blessedness). This was the second step, which gave him a new sanctity, the sanctity of grace. But it was only a wonder that Dante double blessed can complete the process of Mystical Union. Just then he felt his free will finally merge with the divine will, and has to obey only love that this is the soul of the world and that moves the sun and other stars. Only then Dante can to realize the highest human and Christian perfection, the deification of man. Then he became worthy and capable of performing his providential mission: to cooperate on earth the triumph of truth and Christian order, and finally , join the action of the godsend that one day will complete the reform of the Church and the world.

This article aims to indicate that the construction of the biblical literature is marked by the type of economy and the society in which people lived. From this matter, the slave mode of production on the biblical world is discussed. The increasing of the slave culture affected nociably the life of people in biblical times. This shok in the society was so nociable that we find a peasant revolution from 167 to 142 aC, a daring attempt to prevent the advance of greek culture and slavery to the detriment of the classical traditions.
The Symbolic and Moral Interpretation of the Hippocratic Oath
Hélio Angotti-Neto
Original title: A Interpretação Simbólica e Moral do Juramento Hipocrático
Published in Mirabilia Journal
Keywords: Aristotle, Hippocrates, Hippocratic Oath, History of Medicine, Medical Humanities.
The Hippocratic Oath remains as one of the most famous ethical texts in Medical Ethics and Bioethics. The objective of this essay is to clarify its poetic and symbolic interpretations, searching for the adequate comprehension of the Oath using a critical narrative approach with the Aristotelian Theory of the Four Discourses and the interpretation of its direct, indirect, specific and general moral prescriptions. The Oath is a poetic text, which can be used to cause a powerful impression upon the new physician, helping in his moral education and in his commitment with the moral community of Medicine. This analysis makes evident that the Hippocratic Oath still can be used for medical education and professional inspiration, rather than just be discarded as a historical curiosity. The conclusion is that the Oath can be approached more properly with specific literary and philosophical tools that can decode its meanings to better comprehension for the contemporary physician.
