Alienora Dei gratia regina Anglie. The potestas of the English queen Eleanor of Castile (1241-1290): status quaestionis

Andrea BERGAZ ÁLVAREZ

Original title: Alienora Dei gratia regina Anglie. La potestas de la reina Leonor de Castilla (1241-1290): status quaestionis

Published in Music in Antiquity, Middle Ages & Renaissance

Keywords: Eleanor of Castile, England, Historiography, Potestas, Queenship.

The aim of this article is to analyse from a historiographic point of view the potestas of Eleanor of Castile (1241-1290), Queen of England. It studies her activity before she became queen and the extent to which it influenced her subsequent exercise of power. This power is analysed by evaluating the different mechanisms that were used by the queen: mediation and intercession, marriage policy, her influence in the court, her cultural activity, her intervention in the internal and international policy… The political biography of this consort still shows many gaps and questions, something that opens a wide range of possibilities that we believe should be highlighted.

An approach to the textual transmission of Martí de Troppau's Chronicon pontificum et imperatorum in the anonymous Crònica universal de 1427

Jacob MOMPÓ NAVARRO

Original title: Aproximació a la transmissió textual del Chronicon pontificum et imperatorum, de Martí de Troppau, en l’anònim Crònica universal de 1427

Published in

Keywords: Chronicles, Historiography, Textual Transmission, Universal History.

The Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum by Martí de Troppau is, along with the Història Escolàstica by Pere Comestor and the Speculum historiale by Vicenç de Beauvais, one of the main sources used by the compiler of the Crònica universal de 1427. The Chronicon will be referred to three different times by the author himself and will thus give rise to three different families in the textual transmission of Martí de Troppau's work, which L. Weiland identifies with letters A, B and C. In this work we provide some evidence that allows us to assume that the version of the Chronicon from which the author of the Crònica de 1427 compiled came, ultimately, from a thirteenth-century manuscript that depended on the A family, but with enough particularity to start a new subfamily, the A*.

History handbooks and medieval education: Middle Ages historiography, proximities and distances

Luciana Rosar Fornazari KLANOVICZ

Original title: Os manuais de História da Educação e a educação medieval: aproximações e distanciamentos na historiografia sobre Idade Média

Published in Aristocracy and nobility in the Ancient and Medieval World

Keywords: Historiography, History handbooks, Middle Ages, education.

This article addresses interpretations on medieval education available in Education History handbooks in the light of a historiography reading on the topic. Therefore, Paul Monroe’s História da Educação, Edward Myers’ La educación en la perspectiva de la historia, Mario Manacorda’s História da educação, and Franco Cambi’s História da Pedagogia have been analyzed. Amidst any discourse disputes, knowledge on Middle Ages within Education History has also been losing quality or becoming rather symbolic in physical space or time periods, in order to guarantee the identification of western civilization with secularization, progress, and civilization conceived as the ideal society meant to be constructed for the contemporary age.

Reassessing Bourdelot-Bonnet’s first French History of Music (1715)

Myrna HERZOG

Published in Music in Middle Ages and Early Modernity

Keywords: 17th century, 18th century, Bonnet, Bourdelot, France, Gôuts Réunis, Historiography, History of Music.

This is an historiographical examination of the first History of Music published in France in 1715, written during a long span of time by three different authors. Histoire de la Musique et de ses effets depuis son origine jusqu’a present portrays the ideological war taking place in France in the late 17th and early 18th-century between defenders of the French and the Italian styles and proposes an union of the two – what would be later called Les Goûts Réunis (the united tastes) – as an esthetic solution to the conflict.

State, nation and national feeling in the Late Middle Ages

Guillem CHISMOL

Original title: Estado, nación y sentimiento nacional en la Baja Edad Media

Published in

Keywords: Historiography, Middle Ages, Modern State, Nation, Taxation.

The article analyses the formation of the modern state during the later middle ages (13th-15th centuries) in Western Europe. It links the formation of this to the elites close to the monarch with the deployment of complex strategies of collective identification of the notables with the monarchy, the country and the national community. Attention is also given to the materiality of the State, present through permanent taxation, which in turn generated national feelings.

The Hispano-Islamisms of Juan Guas. The fabrication of a Historiographical Stereotype

Roberto GONZÁLEZ RAMOS

Original title: The Hispano-Islamisms of Juan Guas. The fabrication of a Historiographical Stereotype

Published in

Keywords: Historiographical nationalism, Historiography, Islamic influence, Juan Guas, Late Gothic Architecture.

Formalist currents tinged with nationalism in twentieth century historiography developed the idea of Toledo’s late Gothic architecture being imbued with elements and features from Hispano-Islamic architecture, especially in the case of one of its leading lights, the architect Juan Guas. This gave rise to descriptions of a specific, hispanicized style, which had modified its essentially Northern European characteristics. This essay analyses the gradual construction of the aforementioned historiographical viewpoint, its champions, and their arguments and methodological approach. The process can then be reconstructed, with a view to revisiting it and critically analysing underlying assumptions.

The Mudejar as an art style: a historiographical appraisal

José GÓMEZ GALÁN

Original title: El mudéjar como estilo artístico: una valoración historiográfica

Published in

Keywords: Artistic Style, Cultural History, Historiography, History of Art, Mudejar Art.

In this article, a detailed analysis of the historiography of Mudejar art is followed from the birth of the concept in the 19th Century until the present, in order to determine if it is possible to define Mudejar as an independent artistic style. The main points for and against this view are presented and analyzed using as a reference base the most important scientific works carried out in this respect, many of which offer varying interpretations regarding the subject. After the historiographical and epistemological critique, arguments are presented which defend Mudejar art as a singular artistic phenomenon while also giving recognition to the fusion of Christian and Islamic art elements which was the fruit of an intense transfer of cross-cultural knowledge. In this way, it is possible to speak of Mudejar as a cultural expression and an artistic style that emerged from a special geographical location at a unique historical time.

The Templars in France: Between History, Heritage, and Memory

Philippe JOSERAND

Published in Medieval and Early Modern Iberian Peninsula Cultural History

Keywords: France, Historiography, Memory, Myth, Templar Order, XIIth-XXIth Centuries.

A comprehensive scholarly study of the Templars in France has not been published yet. Yet their order, from the outset, was closely linked to the French present space: most brethren were born there, and the langue d’oïl rapidly stood as the official tongue of the institution. For two centuries, the Templars used the Capetian kingdom as the main operations base to act in the Latin East and to sustain their singular vocation merging prayer and warfare into the same religious move. After the trial which opened in 1307 on King Philip the Fair’s initiative, the Templar order, although suppressed, did not entirely disappear from the French landscape: some buildings remained and, even more, a myth took shape, from which an historiography gradually emerged. This scientific movement strengthened from the end of the twentieth century and it now allows to shed new light on the French Templar presence, and to question the generally accepted ideas in order to better understand a medieval reality, which is still fascinating, but often strangely evoked.

The image of the nobility, according to Rafael Martí de Viciana (16th century): from the medieval past to the imperial project

Vicent JOSEP ESCARTÍ

Original title: La imagen de la nobleza, según Rafael Martí de Viciana (s. XVI): del pasado medieval al proyecto imperial

Published in Aristocracy and nobility in the Ancient and Medieval World

Keywords: 16th Hispanic century, Historiography, Nobility, Spanish Empire, Valencia, political ideology.

The present paper makes an analysis of the concept of "nobility" throughout the work of the notary and valencian noble Rafael Martí de Viciana (1502-1582). Across his writings we can see clearly how Viciana, on the paper, combined the ancient and medieval origins of the local nobility with the privileges given by the crown in more recent times, to incorporate the nobles of his time to the new imperial project Carlos V for the Hispanic monarchy.
