Models of Warfare in the Chronicle of D. Duarte de Meneses − Text, Context and Representation

André Luiz BERTOLI

Original title: Modelos de ação bélica na Crônica de D. Duarte de Meneses − Texto, Contexto e Representação

Published in Emotions in the Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean World

Keywords: Chronicle, Models of warlike action, North Africa, Portugal, War.

In this paper I shall present some preliminary research on the Crônica do Conde D. Duarte de Meneses, wrote by Gomes Eanes de Zurara between 1464 and1468. I will make a closer study of several chapters in the chronicle, especially chapter 44 (Riiij) and chapter 154 (CLiiij), which expound the warrior values and Christian virtues that defined the chivalric profiles of the Lusitanian nobility. The chapters selected retell exemplary deeds through which Zurara highlighted among many other types of warlike attitudes that were part of the whole relationship of medieval man to war: the obedience to the captain versus the execution of chivalric prowess. In this chronicle Gomes Eanes de Zurara tried to define an ideal of chivalry adapted to the needs of the Portuguese expansion in North Africa during the fifteenth century, which, in turn, would serve as a model for all the Portuguese warrior nobility in Africa.

Published in Pleasure in the Middle Ages

Keywords: Medieval towns, Pleasure, Portugal, Public festivities, Urban space.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the major Portuguese public festivities in late XIV and XV centuries, mainly in three Portuguese towns – Lisbon, Porto (Oporto) and Braga – in order to study their relationship with the urban space. We start by studying civic and religious festivities, namely royal baptisms, weddings and enthronements, as well as royal and lordly entries in towns, but also regular festivities such as the Corpus Christi. We proceed to study the urban areas where they occurred, their itinerary, the type of festivities (street theater, processions, bullfights, music and dance...) and the ornamentation of those urban areas. Finally we will analyze pleasure connected to these different types of festivities, as well as to various social groups. Our methodology is based upon different types of sources, namely written and iconographic documents, as well as remaining medieval historic buildings and urban plans.

The notion of mobility, at any point in history, is very wide. In order to comprehend it in the Middle Ages, we chose to analyze it through its circulation in written texts. Therefore, the objective of this article is to demonstrate the circulation of A Legenda Aurea in Portugal during the second half of the 15th century. In order to do so, we will present number of possible influences of this text on the Trautado da vida e feitos do muito vertuoso S.or. Infante D. Fernando, a hagiography written by the friar João Álvares in 1450 with the purpose of promoting the royal sanctity of the infant d. Fernando, known as Infante Santo since then.

Published in Society and Culture in Portugal

Keywords: Assistance, Culture, Hospitals, Medicine, Portugal.

The theme of assisting those in need of material resources or spiritual support, and especially the sick, has been the focus of intense historiographical production. The following text points out an aspect that contributed to the reordering of assistance in Portugal at the end of the Middle Ages, focusing on the actions promoted by the monarchs of D. João II and his wife D. Leonor. Our objective is to show how the erudite culture in the court, as well as some external influences, helped to guide the creation of the royal hospitals in Lisbon (Hospital of All Saints) and Caldas da Rainha (Hospital Our Lady of Pópulo).
