Between silence and screams. The emotional manifestations as a support of historical discourse during the reign of John II of Castile

Flora RAMIRES

Original title: Entre el silencio y el grito. Las manifestaciones emocionales como soporte del discurso historiográfico durante el reinado de Juan II de Castilla

Published in Emotions in the Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean World

Keywords: Anger, Emotion, John II of Castile, Politics, Tears.

The emotions of the king John II of Castile (1407-1454), from the official chronicle of the kingdom, the Alvar García de Santa María. We emphasize the importance of emotions in the reign of the king as a political practice. By examining the forms of reactions and emotions that were transmitted and appeared in the historiography of the episode of the hit of Tordesilas be distinguished the words and actions that affirm the power of the king and the power of the emotions of the king. Therefore, we will focus on the silences of the king and the forms of anger.

The Political project and juridical production of Alphonse X. Considerations on the Relationship between Text and Context in some variants in his prologues

Daniel A. PANATERI

Original title: Proyecto político y producción jurídica en Alfonso X. Consideraciones sobre la relación texto-contexto a partir de algunas variantes en sus proemios

Published in Ramon Llull. Seventh centenary

Keywords: Law, Monarchy, Politics, discourse, manuscripts.

The aim of this paper is to show how discursive variants stated in the prologues of the juridical works by Alphonse X –in particular, the Siete Partidas– become essential elements for the analysis of changes in his political projects. In this regard, I intend to show the ways in which alphonsine juridical writings are connected to their context, in order to understand the different communicative strategies that are present in those texts as a part of the changes and adaptations that were influenced by historical events.

The friendship, a political problem. Manueline construction of aristocratic bond

Federico J. ASISS-GONZÁLEZ

Original title: La amistad, un problema político. Construcción manuelina del vínculo aristocrático

Published in Senses and sensibilities in classical and medieval worlds

Keywords: Don Juan Manuel, Friendship, Nobility, Politics.

Friendship is presented before our eyes as a kind of universal bond, as the ideal way to bond with the rest of human beings. Its deployment over time, the loyalty or fidelity with which it solidifies friendly relations seem a topic more proper to ethics than to politics, although decades ago Jacques Derrida revealed it to us as a political issue. However, this work of unveiling that requires us to fully understand the nature of this bond was not such for don Juan Manuel. In his works, friendship occupies a specific function within the discourse on nobility. In fact, the friendship resulted from a pact, as requested by the Fuero de Castiella, between noblemen in order to pacify their relations and to proceed with their political struggles. In this article we propose to analyze the characteristics of this link in the Manueline texts or, in other words, to understand what is friendship for Don Juan Manuel and how it is articulated within the representation of his sector.

Why Did People ‘Invent’ Relics in the Roman East Between the Fourth and Sixth Centuries?

Estelle CRONNIER

Published in Pleasure in the Middle Ages

Keywords: Church, Inventions, Politics, Relics, Roman East.

The cult of relics did not exist in the first centuries of the Christian era, but only came into being in the fourth century. After the Peace of the Church and the Christianisation of the Roman Empire, it became a constitutive element of the new religion. However, a very small number of holy graves known to exist and could be pinpointed. This could explain why a series of ‘inventions’ or miraculous discoveries happened in this time – first of all in the Eastern provinces of the Empire –, that is to meet the needs of worship. But relics were not found at just any time or place. A careful examination of the different cases in their historical context gives us a better understanding of this phenomenon.
