Death as a character in popular culture through History

Ramón MÉNDEZ GONZÁLEZ

Original title: La Muerte como personaje de la cultura popular a lo largo de la Historia

Published in The World of Tradition

Keywords: Art, Culture, Death, History, Literature, Tradition.

Aside from being part of the cycle of life, Death itself became a very important character in popular culture. Since its first appearance as a Horseman during the Apocalypse, and until nowadays, the character of Death has showed different shapes and has inspired a huge array of sculptors, painters, writers, people of letters, composers, movie makers, illustrators and even video game developers. In each different era of human history, the representation of Death evolved to adapt itself to different idiosyncrasies and ways of understanding the world in each society, as well as the possibilities that technologies offered to these creators of art. The main goal of this paper is to give a brief overview of how the character of Death evolved since its origins to nowadays, through the image of the Western Death that was influenced by the Christian rituals and that became the main anthropomorphism of natural Death.

Literature as an Instrument of Legal Defense

María DE HOCES LOMBA

Original title: La Literatura como instrumento de defensa jurídica

Published in

Keywords: Apology, Audience, Classicism, Defense, Humanism, Law, Legal, Literature, Oratory, Persuasion, Petition, Rhetoric.

Based on prestigious literary works and the academic training and personal experiences of its authors, it is possible to establish a real and useful relationship between Law and Literature, so the former is capable of influencing Literature beyond mere fiction. These works, which we would call literary defenses would be able to achieve full effects in the real world, directly affecting the lives of their creators, thus fulfilling the intention with which they were written. They could be considered a subgenre on their own, because this insertion of Law in Literature originates a literary work in depth and form, being capable, at the same time, of displaying effects like a legal document.

Published in Mystic and Millenarianism in Middle Ages

How to think of a mystical experience? Is there any belief in a ‘negative tradition’ that constitutes a literary corpus which can propitiate a specific reading or at least a more restrict one about what we call mystical? Michel de Certeau has already defined it in such way that allow us to penetrate it through literature, specially concerning to narratives writing by women during XVI and XVII centuries. This paper analyses the literary aspects expressed on a mystical experience, based on Michel de Certeau´s works La fable mystique and Mystique au XVII Siecle: le problem du language mystique, and Teresa de Àvila´s poesías líricas and exclamaciones.

Elton O. S. MEDEIROS

Original title: O Sonho da Cruz: a tradição cristã bizantina na Inglaterra anglo-saxônica e a tradução do poema original ao português

Published in Senses and sensibilities in classical and medieval worlds

Keywords: Anglo-Saxon England, Christianity, Literature, Old English, Society.

One of the main symbols of the Christian tradition is the Holy Cross on which Christ was executed. However, unlike the conception of an instrument of torture, in the tradition that was developed, the Cross emerges as a symbol of victory, conquest over death, and the primary symbol of worship since the beginning of the Christian Era and during the Early Middle Ages. In the current article we intend to analyze the presence of the cult of the Cross in Anglo-Saxon England and its link with the Byzantine Christian tradition, mainly in the field of material culture and in the religious literature of the period. We also bring, in the end of this article, the complete translation of the poem The Dream of the Rood to Portuguese.
