  1. Edition and Study of the Relationship of the Feast of Saint Thomas (1656), by Josep Aragonés

    Elia CALBO BOTELLA

    Published in

Keywords: Catalan literature, Memorial, Modern Age, Relation, Valencia.

This article presents the study and regularized spelling edition of Relació de la Festa de Sant Tomàs written by the Valencian notary Josep Aragonés in 1656. This, is our intention to make an approximation to its author and to the text. Finally, we offer the edition of the aforementioned relation, using the criterion of regularized spelling, since the original has not been preserved, but we must start whit an edition made at beginning of the 20th century. Our purpose is to present this edition as one more step in the process of recovering texts in Catalan during the modern age.

  2. The Incunabula from the Valencian Chapter Library: traces of a llibreria vella y antiga

    Published in

Keywords: History of libraries, Incunabula, Valencia Cathedral.

The Valencia Cathedral presently retains 117 incunabula which correspond to 85 different editions. The aim of this article is to show the origin and development of this collection since the Late Middle Ages until today. To this end, we have studied the material features of the books, especially their marks of ownership and provenance. In addition to this, we have analyzed four inventories of the Valencian Chapter Library that were conducted throughout the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries, as well as the inventory prepared by José Sanchis Sivera (1930) and the Catalogue published by Elías Olmos Canalda in 1951. This analysis has allowed us to identify many of the editions preserved today by the Cathedral along with others that have been lost over time, for reasons ranging from the expurgations during the 16th and 17th centuries to a possible transfer to other institutions. Besides, we have been able to establish the early constitution of the collection, since almost 60% of the editions owned at present by the Valencia Cathedral were already there in the middle of the 16th century.

Analysis of an episode of the novel Curial and Guelfa, in which the psychology and the way of acting of the envious are especially focused.

  4. Climbing the walls as a method of conquest, set amongst history and legend. From Damascus to Alhama de Granada

    Eva LAPIEDRA

    Published in

Keywords: City of Brass, Conquest, Giraldo sem Pavor, Literary topos, Reconquest, Storming the walls, Transtextuality.

This article brings together and compares different historical literary texts belonging to the chronicle traditions of both Arabic and Islamic writers and to Latin and Christian chroniclers on the Iberian Peninsula. All of them narrate the surprise conquest of a city using the method of storming and climbing its walls. The continuance of that literary topos through time and space appears to indicate that it was carried from the Arab world to the Latin peninsular Romance across the border between the Almohad empire and the emerging Portuguese empire in the 13th Century. That’s why it appears in Portuguese and Castilian Chronicles, but not in those from Catalonia.

  5. Four brushstrokes for Flamenca (XIII century)

    Anton Maria ESPADALER

Original title: Cuatro pinceladas para Flamenca (siglo XIII)

    Published in

Keywords: Flamenca, Gautier de Châtillon, Mont Musart, Picompan, Raoul de Houdenc, Étienne de Fougères.

  7. Semantic neologisms in the DOLEV-Natura

    Published in

Keywords: Corpus, Diccionaris, Lexicografia, Lingüística del corpus, Semàntica d’Enric Valor.

This article shows the semantic neologisms hitherto not compiled in reference dictionaries (DIEC2, DDLC, DNV and DCVB) which have been found in the dictionary of the nature of the literary work by Enric Valor (DOLEV-Nature). This has been achieved with the help of the tools of the Corpus Informatitzat Multilingüe de Textos Antics i Contemporanis (CIMTAC) by ISIC-IVITRA. These tools allowed us to compile the corpus of the literary work by Enric Valor (COLEV).

  8. From the sagesse des troubadours to the polite allegory of Ramon Llull

    Anna Maria COMPAGNA

    Published in

Keywords: Laicism, Middle Ages, Ramon Lull, Troubadours.

If certain comparisons between works rarely go beyond superficial analogies, the concept of a figure allows us to frame in a new light the affinity of some of Llull’s works with troubadour poetry, where the lady as a metaphor for Wisdom and as a folkloric epiphany presages what which will be the courteous allegorism of Ramon Llull. The importance that Llull gives to the metaphor finds part of his matrix in the love story of the troubadours.

  9. Saints, Painters, Nuns and (Linguistic) Politics. Aspects of Politics and Forbidden Delights in Valencia

    Antonio CORTIJO; Vicent MARTINES

  10. Textual transmission in Latin and romance language of the sermons of Sant Vicent Ferrer

    Published in

Keywords: Latin, Romance, Sermons, St. Vincent Ferrer.

The aim of the present article is to explain the textual transmission in Latin and romance language of the sermons preached by S. Vicent Ferrer. His sermons were scored by listeners who were transcribing them and are notable texts in Valencian, Catalan and Castilian medieval literature. In fact, the oldest Vincentian sermons that have come down to us are in latin – which is not to say that he might preach in that language but for its wider dissemination and usefulness were collected in it–, while it is accurate that in some few occasions have some words in other languages, probably introduced by the same reportatores.
