From cognitive perception to auditory perception. The evolution of the verb entendre in Old Catalan (13th-16th centuries)
Jordi Manuel ANTOLÍ MARTÍNEZ
Original title: De la percepció cognitiva a la percepció auditiva. L’evolució del verb entendre en català antic (segles XIII-XVI)
Published in
Keywords: Auditory Verbs, Evidenciality, Invited Inferencing, Old Catalan, Perception Verbs, Verb Entendre.
This study analyzes the process of semantic change by which the Old Catalan verb entendre developed from the 13th to the 16th centuries from a meaning based on intellectual perception to one implying auditory perception. In particular, this article shows that by the end of the 14th century the verb entendre had only semanticized the perception of linguistic stimuli and had not fused completely with the meaning of the verb oir, as was the case with the evolution of INTENDERE in other Romance languages (such as French, Occitan, and Sardinian). Our study has been based on data analysis of an electronic linguistic corpus using the concepts of E. C. Traugott's Invited Interfering Theory of Semantic Change (TCSII) (2012) and the concept of evidenciality.

Carles SEGURA-LLOPES
Original title: L’evolució de la forma verbal cantara en català: un estudi de corpus
Published in
Keywords: Catalan, Historical Grammar, Semantics, Syntax, Verbal Tense.
The analysis of verbal tenses is a well-studied topic in Romance Languages, for which there are excellent studies and monographs in what pertains to the Catalan language. In this article we offer an overview of this topic based on an analysis of several electronic corpora developed within the Institute ISIC-IVITRA or with its participation, such as: the Electronic Corpus of Old Catalan (Corpus Informatitzat del Català Antic [CICA]), the Metacorpus(that is the Electronic Multilingual Corpus of Old and Contemporary Texts, Corpus Informatitzat Multilingüe de Textos Antics i Contemporanis [CIMTAC]), and the Electronic Corpus for the Old Catalan Grammar (Corpus Informatitzat per a la Gramàtica del Català Antic [CIGCA]). We study the forms of the verb cantara from the first examples of its use in the 12th century to the end of the 16th century. Our intention is to identify their main values, describe the progressive development, and determine how and when these forms assumed the typical syntantic functions associated with the imperfect subjunctive that are typical of Castilian and of many of the Valencian varieties of the Catalan language.

This article analyzes the case of the cantor of the cathedral of Orihuela, Domingo Bou y Miralles, whose love affairs with a young widow would earn him exile between 1691 and 1692, at the request of the local bishop Antonino Sánchez de Castellar and by order of the crown. A little more than half a year of purgation at court was enough for the pre-blessed, it seems, to stop join astray and return to the fold, since then giving himself up to the ecclesiastical office that was his own.

Keywords: Alpujarras, Bandits, Don Antic Sarriera, Moorish.
The War of the Alpujarras was one of the central conflicts of the end of the 1560s for Philip II. The mobilization was massive and urgent in many cases, with the participation of a large part of the Castilian cities and the deployment of contingents that would offer support for the war but would cause severe discipline problems. Catalonia was not alienated from this mobilization. Among the nobles and specific personalities, the bandit soldiers of Antic Sarriera stood out. Both their leader and this contingent, raised in Girona’s counties, with special attention to Empordà, left a documentary trace that will be analysed in this study.

Original title: Paral·lelismes entre la intercessió mahometana i el Llibre del gentil e dels tres savis. Una altra perspectiva
Published in
Keywords: Eschatology, Islam, Ramon Llull.
The parliament of the Saracen in the Llibre del gentil e dels tres savis exemplifies Ramon Llull's way of showing us the cultural and religious elements that revolve around Islam. We will see how easy it is to see the degree of fidelity that underlies the parliament of the Saracen if we compare it with the Koran and the Sunna. On the one hand, the Lullian vision of the Islamic religion will be analysed. On the other hand, the aim is to highlight the respectful way in which Ramon Llull treated both the Muslims in his work and Islam, which was far removed from the aspirations of the time.

Original title: Introducció a les conflictivitats gremials entre sastres i pellers en la València foral moderna
Published in
Keywords: Conflict, Decline, Disobedience, Guilds.
We are in the modern Valencia of the 16th century where the powers to achieve the trade union control encouraged the tensions between the closest professional groups, which had the objective of gaining ground within the complex world of craftsmanship. There are many guilds that confronted each other, but however, the tailors and pellers lawsuits have been considered as one of the most important processes and the longest historical route of trade-union unrest in the city of Valencia. The processes arranged chronologically from 1535 to 1695 will be key to understanding the reasons for the conflict, the arguments used by each guild and how they acted in this regard, to analyze who were the most affected and explain the solutions. This analysis will allow us to understand tailors and pellers trade in more detail, to realize the main characteristics of each guild and discern the historical evolution of each one of them in a closer way. A first study, which helps us to understand the importance of guild conflicts between these two trades and helps us to look beyond disobedience.

Keywords: Interregnum, Jurats of Valencia, Medieval communication, Medieval letters, Vicent Ferrer.
The investigation investigates epistolary relationships between two of the most important Valencian actors of the Caspe Commitment era, the juries of Valencia and Vicente Ferrer. It is also a study on medieval semi-public communication since one of the actors in the communication, the issuer is a public institution and the other, the receiver, is a particular physical person. However, the present work does not stop at mere communication and aims to show the political role played by the juries and the saint throughout the Interregnum and how their relationship changes depending on their political position on who they defend as the legitimate king of the Crown of Aragon.

The tree and the light. Signs and significances in the Llibre d’amic e amat by Ramon Llull
Maria SAIZ RAIMUNDO
Original title: L’arbre i la llum. Signes i significacions al Llibre d’amic e amat de Ramon Llull
Published in
Keywords: Llibre d’amic e amat, Mysticism, Ramon Llull, Sign, Significance.
All the creatures are divided into signs and significates: all signs are things, and, in addition, there are significant. In the Middle Ages, the world is a place of theophanys and, therefore, all creatures and all creation are sign of God. Thus, the signs become a fundamental element of a medieval culture and, obviously, they also play an important role in the literature of the time. In this work, we suggest proposing identifying and analyzing two of the elements that have an important significance in the Llibre d'amic i amat by Ramon Llull: the tree and the light. This element serves the hermit (l’amic) in the cam to the search of God (l’amat), since they are at the service of the first Llull intention: to love, to understand and to serve God.
